Intercourse, PA

This Amish town was literally named Intercourse! There were also some other interesting names as well that I'm not sure are blog appropriate... I have no idea who came up with them! Everyone has probably heard about the Amish community and their lifestyle: horse buggies, no electricity, and no shaving once married are just a few. While visiting Nick's family in Philly we took about a 20 minute drive to go see it all first hand. It was so strange that in one direction of their house was downtown which was booming with historical sites, restaurants, music and people everywhere! In the other direction were open fields, tons of trees, and this little Amish community! The most interesting aspect of it all was the simplicity of their lifestyle. I can't imagine how it would be to not have a car, tv, computer, cell phone, or even a microwave! A piece of me thinks that it might be nice to get back to the basics of life; talking with friends and family, playing games, and not worrying so much about everything going on in the world around us. Even if the Amish life isn't for me, it was sure interesting learning a little more about it!

Possibly our next Christmas card!

Us in front of a little buggy.

The bathroom and playground at one of the schools, two sea-saws and a few swings.

The school house for all the kids. They stop school after 8th grade.

A buggy in front of us when we were driving. There was a little boy standing in the back.

Cars and buggies have to share the road. It was so strange to see them stopped at lights, or even funnier, parked outside of a gas station!

We were driving and saw this family walking down the field.

Hudson wearing a little hat the Amish boys wear.
Us wearing Amish hats.

Need I explain more?...

  3. I remember visiting an Amish community when I was a kid with my grandparents. They had the best bread and honey butter!
